Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from her grandmother Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example how art could serve as an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay's mother also had the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her life, but spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma to later direct the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she started to get fascinated by the production aspect of television journalism. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. Due to her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks including Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
